Tips for Caregivers
1) Try
and plan time to allow your child and siblings to discuss
their feelings in a supportive, safe environment. Using
the instructions on your "Here for You" Sesame
Workshop DVD is a good way to start the conversation. You
can also ask for help from professional counselors who can
talk to your child and siblings about their feelings on
a level the children will be comfortable with.
2) Your
child will let you know when he is able and willing to talk
about his feelings and needs.
3) Reassure
your child that you will keep her comfortable and safe at
all times.
4) Let
your child know that he is loved, very special, and reassure
him that you will be okay no matter what he tells you.
5) It's
best to identify and talk about worries, concerns and fears
rather than hold these stressful emotions inside.
6) Prepare
a list of specific questions to ask your doctor regarding
your child's illness. It's important to understand the planned
outcome of treatments and tests, so be sure to ask your
doctor to spend time with you so that you thoroughly understand
the answers. Being an active participant in your child's
care is important, so try and ask as many questions as you
need to understand the medical as well as he non-medical
aspects of caring for your child.
